WHAT:

Main Street Brownsville announces the 2nd Annual PARK(ing) Day, a global event where citizens, artists and activists collaborate to temporarily transform metered parking spaces into “PARK(ing)” spaces: temporary public places, to be held from 4 to 8 p.m. on Friday, September 15, 2017, in Brownsville’s Main Street District.

Local businesses and organizations will take part in PARK(ing) Day by transforming metered parking spaces within two locations in Brownsville’s Main Street District:
(1) E. Washington Street (between E. 13th Street and E. 14th Street); and
(2) 14th Street Plaza, E. Washington Street and E. 14th Street.

Participating entities include: the City of Brownsville Parks & Recreation Department; the Brownsville Public Library System; Keep Brownsville Beautiful; the Bicycle & Pedestrian Advisory Committee; the Brownsville Historical Association; Brownsville Wellness Coalition; Community Development Corporation of Brownsville; Gladys Porter Zoo; The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley; Carlotta K. Petrina Cultural Central; B & E Art Studio; and The Kraken Lounge.

PARK(ing) Day will also feature live music from local artists: Mind Over Matter; La Ratera; Dethgaze; and Ideophonic.

PARK(ing) Day began in 2005 when Rebar, a San Francisco art and design studio, converted a single metered parking space into a temporary public park in downtown San Francisco. Since 2005, PARK(ing) Day has evolved into a global movement, with organizations and individuals creating new forms of temporary public space in urban contexts around the world.
